ha ha he he ho ho we're in summer

so after all my moaning in my last post about taking my guitar with me, i since begrudgingly decided that it was more sensible to take clothes, and my poor guitar has stayed home. its probably getting very lonely. the upshot is that when i get to london i get to buy a new guitar, and in the meantime terence will lend me a guitar in new york.

so we flew to LA, which was long and uncomfortable, but survivable. watched the start of four movies, but none could hold my attention, so switched to shorter tv shows. we got to LA and Dan and Vic were there to drive us down to San Diego. we arrived and pretty much went straight to the beach. it felt so great to be swimming at a sunny beach after being in the middle of winter the day before. the waves were wavy, the sand was sandy, and the fun was funny.

today we did more swimming, this time at a different beach (La Jolla Cove) which had lots of friendly fish, show-off seals, and large beaked pelicans. we then tried to swim out to a buoy (pronounced 'boo-ey') but my unfitness slowed team swim down and we gave up midway. still swam enough to justify a feeling of righteous laziness for the rest of the day - made the martini and mexican kai go down a treat too.

san diego is fascinating anthropologically. everything is big and designed to be consumed and spat out - food portions, houses, cars, shops - everything is bigger and brighter than needed. but at the same time its all excessively pretty.

leaving on a jet pack...

so tomorrow (Sunday) 4pm we leave wellington, fly to auckland, then on to LA, arriving Sunday lunchtime. Timetravel is confusing. i feel like Dr Who (Christopher Eccleston of course). but then if i was Dr Who I would have a TARDIS which would mean i wouldn't need to sit on the plane for 12 hours, and more importantly i wouldn't need to try fit all my stuff into a very small bag. i love my guitar and i'm pleased i'm taking it overseas with me, and i'm very pleased i've got a gig booked for new york (aug 28 sidewalk cafe), but i'd certainly be able to take more clothes and living stuff if my beautiful maton wasn't coming with me. ah, rock and roll sacrifice.

ok, let's finish with a dr who quote:

triangle eyes

they say if you watch too much telly, you get square eyes, but i'm now pleased to say that if you watch too much triangle tv you'll get to see my NYC music video lots. its playing on auckland and wellington channels. i've never seen either but apparently they're a lot of fun.

meanwhile we leave this wee town on sunday and head off to sunny san diego. i miss sun so i'm quite excited. and to lower the tone a little, here's my fave quote about san diego:

Ron Burgundy: Discovered by the Germans in 1904, they named it San Diego, which of course in German means a whale's vagina.
Veronica Corningstone: No, there's no way that's correct.
Ron Burgundy: I'm sorry, I was trying to impress you. I don't know what it means. I'll be honest, I don't think anyone knows what it means anymore. Scholars maintain that the translation was lost hundreds of years ago.
Veronica Corningstone: Doesn't it mean Saint Diego?
Ron Burgundy: No. No.
Veronica Corningstone: No, that's - that's what it means. Really.
Ron Burgundy: Agree to disagree.

Mime is Money

Top Five Mime Moments:

5. Marcel Marceau speaking the only line in Silent Movie (he says "No")
4. Mummenschanz clowning it up on the Muppet Show
3. Billy Crystal as the mime manager in Spinal Tap (his role is bigger and funnier in the deleted scenes)
2. The Mimes fall in love in Paris J'Taime
1. Trygve trying to get into my NYC video.

Is my music video really the number one mime moment in the history of miming? I say Yes.
