Happy Benday

So yesterday was my CD Million Miles Away's 1st birthday. it was one year ago that i released it at HAPPY. since then CD sales have soured well into double figures. And the party ain't over yet, because early next month i'll be making a video for NYC. i'll tell you more about that once i know more, but if you're in auckland on march 4th, there could be a chance for you to be an extra in the vid. b

Dogs and racoons

So last night i went to San Fran Bathhouse to see the Handsome Family. The opening band The Moon Whisperers were a truly awful exercise in wasted potential. The lead singer dressed in cool medieval clothes and alice cooper like face paint, and could have played odd left of centre music, but no it was just tedious depressing emo. to make it more comical her last song was dedicated to anyone getting married, but it would have sounded more appropriate at a funeral.

the handsome family on the other hand were great. their songs are wonderful in a southern gothic surreal kind of way, but what makes them fun is their between song banter. they said so many funny lines which would make little sense out of context written here in this blog. so like all bad stories, this one will finish with 'i guess you had to be there'.

now i'm looking forward to Joanna Newsom and Smog on Sunday night.

Detox

So i was just speaking to this guy who is doing some kind of healthy liver detox - he's given up alcohol and coffee and food with taste or flavour, and apparently after just a few weeks he's feeling so much better.

why would anyone want to know that they could feel so much better if they just gave up all their favourite things?!? isn't life guilt inducing enough without knowing that its your own fault that you feel this bad.

In a similar vein, on saturday the Plastic Kitchen played a great set at Bodega, including showcasing new tunes 'Alice is an Astronaut' and 'Stretch'. Stretch is a song Cilla wrote based on some trippy things her four year old said, and i have to say it is one of the greatest songs i have ever heard. ever. hopefully we'll record it soon. anyway, back to that similar vein thing, before the gig i went into the bodega bathroom and did some vocal warm-ups (as taught to me by the wonderful jazz / blues singer Jo-Anne Gibbs), but then i go on stage and immediately forget all i know about singing and just begin screaming and pushing my voice to unpleasant places. too much energy, not enough soul. or something. oh well.
