First rule

so the first rule of performing is to never apologise. i broke that rule last night, and i'm sorry.

kali and i went to blue note open mic to make some noise. kali performed two of her songs - 'twas her first time performing solo - and she sounded fantastic. She played My Favourite Lullaby (which you can also hear her perform tonight at room 101 when she plays with The Bridge of Sighs) and Handshake. loved both songs. then i got up to join her for my song Brothel. and i started the song too slow, so it wasn't sounding as good as usual, but more annoying than that was i couldn't hear myself at all, so i strained my voice singing. however i had assumed that the audience could hear me or else the MC would have stopped us and fixed it, but no he did nothing, then at the end of the mic said 'i don't think your mic was on'. poos. my frustratiion led me to apologise and even as i was doing i was thinking 'don't apologise', but i did. sorry. i then struggled through Vandals in Love and Drinking Song with a strained sore voice, played both songs slower than i meant to, but the punters still seemed to like what i did (once they could hear me). even got Toby (Wellington beatbox champion) singing along to the drinking song.

btw, last night's Drinking Song featured corrected lyrics - its now Frank Poncherello and Michael Knight, instead of the previous mistake of calling Ponch 'Jon Poncherelli' - just shows my memory of early 80s traffic cop shows isn't as good as i thought. although i still remember one cool roller disco episode of CHiPs where the baddies had boots and they pushed a button and skates popped out the bottom of the shoe and they skated away. (don't worry Ponch and Jon still caught them, and i'm sure Ponch flirted with one of them).

i can't even name three stars

yay, the new Rip It Up magazine features a great review of my cd. i've just added it to the Million Miles Away page of this website, so check it out.

also in the yay department. last night the plastic kitchen began recording some more tracks. we'll continue the recording tonight and tomorrow night. So far we've recorded a great electroclash version of Walkman, a countrified take of Lucinda, and a great version of No For An Answer but i'm not able to comment on what that will sound like genre-wise until we add vocals and do a bit more tinkering. anyway its all v exciting, and i'll get some new tracks on line as soon as i can.

in the less yay department is China. Everyone is quick to report on its appalling human rights abuses until its time to negotiate a free trade deal or compete in the olympics, and suddenly its quiet-time. Grrrr
